DIY Christmas tree decor

I learned about this DIY Christmas decor when my family used to live in Chattanooga--15 years or so ago--from our hairdresser. He was quite the stylish man from what I can remember and always feathered my hair just like Farrah Fawcett. I hated it, but it was all the rage. That's besides the point. He showed us a practically free way to re-use some things in our home as Christmas decor.

We've all got stacks and stacks of magazines under the coffee table or in a basket beside the recliner, right? Grab a few of those because they will be your Christmas tree. The smaller the magazine the better, so grab your National Geos or Reader's Digests. And if you're like me and like to spray paint stuff, then you might just have some extra in the garage. If not, most stores carry the smaller cans of spray paint for less than your large fast food meal.

[one] Fold your magazine like this.

[two] Fold it again this direction.

[three] Continue to fold all pages of the magazine.

[four] Either glue the front and back together or clip them with several paper clips.

[five] Pick your color of spray paint--maybe one that matches your Christmas decor--and spray the entire tree until most all wording and pictures of the magazine are covered. If you want to get extra glitzy, spray paint the tree white and then lightly spray some gold or silver spray paint on top.

But if you want, leaving it bare gives it a rustic charm, don't cha think? You could add some ribbon, bows, whatever you like to make it your own.

And you're done! You can start with different shaped magazines and you'll come out with different height Christmas trees. Fun, right?!

I love being able to re-use magazines because they're either a) collecting dust in a stack on my living room floor or b) being thrown away and recycled as soon as I read them.
